Throughout my technology class, the BC Curriculum Model’s competency-based approach has profoundly influenced my understanding of education. Learning about core competencies, curricular competencies, big ideas, and content has highlighted the significance of a student-centered approach that fosters holistic development and practical application of knowledge. The focus on core competencies like communication, critical thinking, creative thinking, and personal and social responsibility has expanded my view on essential skills necessary for success in the modern world. Integrating these competencies into the curriculum ensures that education goes beyond memorization and empowers students with adaptable skills for real-life situations. Additionally, emphasizing curricular competencies through inquiry-based learning and project-based assessments deepens understanding and encourages active engagement in the learning process. Organizing the curriculum around big ideas offers students a sense of purpose and relevance, connecting learning to broader contexts and long-lasting understandings.
Comparatively, the lack of a competency-based curriculum model in the Iranian educational system becomes evident. In Iran, the focus is primarily on content delivery and standardized testing, leading to rote memorization and short-term knowledge retention. Core competencies vital for overall growth and future success receive inadequate attention in the curriculum. The absence of curricular competencies limits opportunities for active learning and essential skill development, such as critical thinking and effective communication. Moreover, the Iranian curriculum’s lack of emphasis on big ideas results in fragmented learning experiences and fails to demonstrate the interconnectedness of different subjects and real-world applications. The discrepancy between the two systems underscores the significance of adopting a competency-based approach to create a more student-centric and relevant learning experience, empowering students with essential competencies and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing world.
